Splintered

Splintered - A.G. Howard ★★★☆ 3.5 StarsSplintered is part sequel, part homage to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Since childhood, bugs and flowers have spoken to Alyssa. She has always thought she was mentally ill like her mother, but when she discovers her true heritage––that she is a descendent of Alice Liddell, she embarks on an adventure to return to Wonderland and correct the mistakes her great grandmother made.Splintered didn't really work for me. There are so many references to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that it started to feel a little like fan-fiction. The book is well written and very polished and I can understand why it has received so many high ratings but the book was trying to be edgy and perhaps a little dangerous but it never quite succeeded. Knocking over sacred cows is always a risky venture, and I guess there aren't too many more sacred than Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. A.G. Howard deserves some kudos for her efforts and that cover is sublime...I'm tempted to bump the book up to 4 stars just for the cover.
